The advantages with a SLR camera: 
  • Viewing System. What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG), if you forgot the lens cap, you can't view your subject, same like put special filter in front of the lens, it show you what your subject look like on film. 
  • Interchangeable Lenses. You can selects as many lenses as you can afforded, from full circle fisheye lens to super telephoto lenses, from macro/micro close-up lenses to (PC) Perspective Control / (TS) Tilt-Shift lenses. Some cameras maker offer Medical / Dental Lens.
  • Depth-of-Field Pre-View. Some advanced cameras, offer its users a DOF Pre-View button. You can press this DOF Pre-View button, to stop down the diaphragm, so you can see the depth-of-field at taking aperture. Or you can select your aperture on the basic of desired depth-of-field.

Note: Check with your camera operation manual, some cameras may NOT have a DOF Pre-View Button
