Almost modern 35mm SLR cameras, came with those features below:
  • Auto Return Mirror. The mirror flips up -quiet, lightning fast- for the exposure and then instantly springs back to focusing-viewing position. The image seen like you flip your eyes lids. The action is positive and complete even with the camera held and used upside down.
  • Auto Lens Diaphragm. The lens is always wide open for focusing and viewing. But at the instant the shutter released, the diaphragm automatically closes down to selected taking aperture, and then , instantly, re-opens to it maximum wide aperture.

Table below show how mirror and diaphragm work together.

In View/Focus Mode. Mirror in reflex position, diaphragm in wide open.
Taking Mode. Mirror rise up, diaphragm close down to pre-set aperture
